How To Make A Small Bedroom Look Bigger

How To Make A Small Bedroom Look Bigger

A large bedroom with a ginormous bed seems like the ultimate dream for every homeowner. But as most decorators and realtors may know, physical space alone is not the only thing to think about when trying to impact the overall look of the room.

In fact, there are many ways to make a seemingly small room look much larger than it already is. And word has it, most of these fixes are incredibly cost-effective and won’t take too much of your time as well. If you’re dealing with a small room and are looking for ways to maximise space and make it look bigger, here are a few ideas you can try out:

1. Get Rid of the Clutter

Let’s start with the obvious here. If you want your room to look bigger, ensure its clutter-free. Opt for a minimalist look and get rid of the excess. Get some inspiration from tv and online on how to declutter your home and see what a difference it makes to your life.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you throw out everything. Keep items that spark joy in your life and in your room. Hanging artwork and picture frames should take care of the bare walls you are left with afterward.

2. Incorporate Mirrors

Adding mirrors is an excellent way to add more personality to your room. And besides, you will require a full-length mirror to dress up anyway.

Hanging a large mirror can work wonders and create an illusion of space, allowing your room to look much larger than it actually is. If you don’t have enough room to incorporate full-length mirrors, you can opt for ornate mirrors or a cluster of different designs. It’s best to go with whatever option best suits your décor and overall style.

3. Try Monochromatic Paints

Your room will ultimately look larger if there’s a continuity to it. Consider painting your room in monochromatic colours. Following the same theme will create harmony and cohesiveness that will result in an illusion of increased space.

On the other hand, opting for bold contrasts on each wall can easily create segments, highlighting the limited amount of space you have to work with. Consider opting for lighter shades since that will help your room look much brighter. Go with the flow and coordinate colours according to your overall décor and style.

4. Keep Things Low

Do you realise what else can help your room look much bigger? Opting for smaller furniture and steering clear from tall chairs and tables. By opting for furniture that stays low on the ground, you’ll have more wall and ceiling space to breathe in. This will also prevent your room from appearing super cluttered.

We also would recommend opting for a lower headboard since that would also free up some space. Also, don’t forget to read up on how to decorate bedroom walls.

5. Opt for Lighter Shades

You’ll normally find people painting their rooms white to help it look bigger, but you don’t necessarily have to follow that particular trend. Yes, painting your room all white is an excellent way to create an illusion of space and brighten but the place, but it can also dull your vibes.

To prevent this from happening, consider opting for lighter shades. Pastels are a cute summery option although you can also play with light hues of grey for a more mysterious look.

Alternatively, you can also mix your favourite colour with some white to tone it down. We recommend opting for cool tones such as blues and greens to enhance space.

6. Matching Window Treatments

While you may be tempted to use large blinds and drapes, it can be counter intuitive if you want your room to look much bigger. And this is simply because these blinds will contrast the walls, creating a separation which may look like added clutter.

To minimise the impact, consider investing in window treatments that will match your walls. This will create fluidity and continuity, which will result in an illusion of space. In other words, if your walls are painted light shades of grey, opt for drapes in a similar colour. Doing so will add a bit of texture to your room without making it look too small.

7. Keep the Drapes off The Floor

Now here’s another tip that will help your bedroom look much larger than it already is – opt for shorter drapes. Most folks don’t give this a lot of thought but opting for drapes that fall all the way down to the floor occupy extra room. Do yourself a favour and cut them a few centimetres short to clear up some floor space.

Alternatively, you can also tie up your drapes if you don’t think trimming it down is a good idea. Better yet, skip the idea of drapes altogether and let the sun shine right into your room. You can invest in special glass windows if privacy is a concern. Or have sheer fabric.

8. Place Small Lamps Around The Room

Here is a neat trick that won’t cost much time and effort. Consider placing several small lamps around your room. This is an excellent way to draw eyes evenly around the room without over accentuating a single spot. Two lamps can be placed on either side of your bed while another one can be placed near a desk.

This is a much better option than only having a single light source.

9. Simple Bed sheets Over Loud Patterned Ones

When you have a small bedroom, it’s best to steer away from too many loud patterns and textures in your room. This will result in excess contrast that will, in return, cause your room to appear much smaller than it already is.

Do your best to coordinate patterns and shapes to create a flow in your room. You don’t want your drapes to contrast your sheets. Instead, aim for harmony as much as possible and stick to a theme. We have said this before, but it’s worth mentioning again – opt for lighter colour schemes. It’ll clear your room up a bit.

Alternatively, if playing it safe seems too boring to you, get creative with personalised quilts and blankets that you can use.

10. Switch to Translucent or Transparent Furniture

Throughout this post, we’ve highlighted the importance of following a theme and blending all the elements of your room together. Now, what better way to do so than to opt for translucent or transparent furniture. You don’t have to go bold, a simple desk or chair is good enough. Using translucent furniture can also help create a futuristic and modern vibe.

11. Go with the Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is widely followed in the world of arts and photography, and if we’re being completely honest, it comes in handy for room decors too. Mentally divide your walls into three equal sections. The goal is not to crowd the entire space. Limit wall hangings to the lower third of the room. On the other hand, storage units and shelves must be added on the upper third section.

Doing so will clear space in between, prevent your room from appearing stuffy and over-crowded. Also, hanging items high up on the wall can give an illusion of height. This might help your room appear taller than it already is.

12. Coordinate Horizontals and Verticals

This is another important rule that will bring more harmony to your space. Step back and picture your room as a large painting. Like any great artist, you’ll want to take care of how much space each component occupies and how many different patterns you’ll be including in your entire palette. In the same way, try to create pattern instead of just mixing and matching.

Make a conscious effort to place each item where it really belongs.

13. Try to Be Neat

Now, we’re not expecting you to turn into a neat-freak overnight but try not to be sloppy. An untidy room will always appear smaller because you’re disorganised and have things placed everywhere. Make an effort to stay organised and watch how that will transform the overall look of your room.

If you’re worried about not being able to clean your room from time to time, it will probably be best to clear excess items and shift them somewhere else. Empty space and don’t feel compelled to fill every nook and cranny to the brim.

We understand that not everyone can have the largest bedroom in an apartment or small house. But using the above mentioned techniques can play a pivotal role in getting the most out of your small space.
