Industrial Design Inspired Bedrooms

Industrial Design Inspired Bedrooms

I was recently appointed to design and oversee a bedroom renovation for a client in Cheshire as part of a whole house revamp.

The two daughters were the first to experience the transformation. I met with the parents and their girls to receive feedback on my initial ideas and it was clear from the beginning that the girls had very different ideas when it came to how their new rooms were going to look.

The eldest daughter was drawn to my ideas for a soft and feminine take on industrial design.

We spent the first couple of meetings discussing my ideas on how to achieve this look. I provided the client with drawings and 3D plans showing how we could use bespoke industrial style furniture. As time passed, it was decided that we’d construct a reading nook at the bed end of the room using reclaimed scaffolding boards and copper coated piping.

The other end of the room, which wasn’t presently serving any purpose, was to become a homework and writing area. I designed space for more books to be stored and we continued the industrial theme with the same bespoke furniture specification.

We used a combination of paint and wallpaper for the decoration, and as part of the design I chose to create a cladding effect with timber-look wallpaper.

Lighting is important when creating authenticity within an industrial inspired design project. The ceiling light source was relocated to the centre of the room at the foot of the bed and we replaced the fitting with an interesting focal point from a trendy Austrian lighting company.

After the decorating was completed and the new lighting was installed we also fitted a very plush grey coloured carpet as a neutral base colour for the room.

Once the bespoke industrial style furniture was assembled on site, I styled the bedroom with the new accessories including wall art, table lamps, cute little ornaments new bedding and soft furnishings.

The girl had a couple of cactus plants that she was fond of, so I decided to add to her collection and use the plants as part of the theme. I designed creative ways to display them – including using a hanging glass globe terrarium and finding a few pretty succulents to provide contrasting colours and textures.

When choosing accessories for this room I wanted to keep with the industrial theme but add a bit of personality and reflect the youthfulness of who the room was created for. I opted to use copper and rose gold metal tones with ornaments and features such as the clock and display grid for the wall. We also used rose gold firefly lights to soften the overall look.

The finished result can be viewed in the photographs below. The clients and their daughter love the bedroom and I’m sure that the style will still suit her well into her twenties.
